Avionics Department Manager

Job Summary
Currently there is an opening for the position of Avionics Manager to lead a team of technicians in maintaining, upgrading, and installing avionics in small general aviation aircraft. The manager will be responsible for hands-on troubleshooting, maintenance, repair, upgrading, installing, and other tasks required to run the department effectively. As the department expands the team under them will expand as the department’s budget grows through success and demand. A strong history with experience in modern day avionics is required for this position as they must be able to troubleshoot, repair, maintain, upgrade, and install with little supervision. The manager will also be responsible for creating estimates for repairs, maintenance, installations, and upgrades as required. Strong experience with Garmin is required.
Key Responsibilities
- Create Estimates for customers – This position requires that the manager create estimates for customers when requested.
- Have Strong Troubleshooting Experience – Must be able to troubleshoot common avionics issues and work through issues to troubleshoot the issue, develop a plan to repair, repair the issue, and test the issue in most cases.
- Work with other departments when required – Will need to work with other departments when required.
- Be able to communicate with customers – This position requires communicating with customers, and the manager will need to communicate with them on different aspects of jobs.
- Do Routine and Unscheduled Maintenance: Must be able to lead by example by doing routine and unscheduled maintenance when required.
- Troubleshoot and Repair Avionics Systems: Diagnose and troubleshoot avionics faults then develop a plan to repair the fault and fix it.
- Know the Regulations and follow the requirements of the Repair Station: Need to know and understand the regulations that govern the work that they perform along with the repair station to remain within the regulations.
- Help the Management Team monitor and manage the workflow – Working with the management team, they will work together to monitor and manage the shops overall workflow to make sure that the aircraft are being completed in a timely manner.
- Help Train Others - It is expected that everyone can learn from everyone, all team members help expand the abilities of other team members when they can. The manager would be expected to help others learn and expand their abilities while they work.
- Improve the Department and Company – Work with the Management Team to always monitor and look for ways to improve the department and company for improvements to make both stronger.
- Part Ordering – When required, work with the office personnel to turn in orders for future jobs and monitor progress on part orders for job management.
Requirements
- Avionics Experience – Must have experience with small general aviation aircraft (Cessna 172 to 208, Pipers, Beechcraft Single Engine to King Air, etc.) and modern-day avionics (Garmin primarily and other major manufacturers are a plus).
- Certification: FAA Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) certification is a plus. IA certification is a bigger plus.
- Minimum Years - Minimum of 5 years of experience in aircraft maintenance, with at least 2 years in a leadership or supervisory role preferred.
- Avionics Knowledge – It is expected that the Manager will have a high experience level and knowledge of most basic avionics’ platforms in small general aviation aircraft. Must be able to read wire diagrams, be able to quote projects from basic items to full upgrades.
- Shop Work – This position is management, but it does require shop work by the manager. All managers within the company work on the shop floor in their departments. As the department’s income grows, workload, team size, etc. grows, it is expected at some point that it may not require the shop floor work, but at this stage it will require it.
- Documentation Interpretation - It is required that the manager be able to read in English, and understand all manuals from the manufactures, FAA, and other documentation that is put out by manufactures. Must be able to follow instructions and complete work completely per the instructions.
- Aware of Time – The manager should be aware of costs associated with projects and the effects toward customers. Be able to perform safely but also efficiently.
Other Requirements
- Must be eligible to work in the U.S.
- Must Live within 30 minutes of work unless prior arrangements are agreed to.
- Must pass a pre-employment drug screening
- Required to be able to pass the TSA regulation requirements to get a General Aviation Access badge or Secure Access if licensed.
- Must be able to stand for long periods of time.
- Most of the time all work is performed within the Hangar, but it is not heated or air conditioned. It is cold at times in the winter, and hot in the summer.
- Must be able to lift items that are heavy.
- Must be able to work with others and be self-motivated to be able to work alone on projects at times.
- Must have basic tools.
- Having their Airframe and Powerplant License is a strongly preferred item.
- Having their Inspector Authorization is a bonus.
