Lead, Mechanical Engineering

About the Lead Mechanical Engineering position

Our Mechanical Engineers are key members of Avidyne's Hardware Engineering Team, a multidisciplinary, tight-knit group of engineers and technicians who develop and support Avidyne's wide array of products and projects.

The Lead Mechanical Engineer is primarily responsible for overseeing the design, development, modification, and evaluation of robust electronics packaging and electromechanical devices including the design of human interfaces for aviation cockpit displays, as well as the team dedicated to these tasks. Secondary responsibilities may include participating in peer design reviews, supporting manufacturing, troubleshooting field issues, and technical documentation.

Our Lead Mechanical Engineer’s responsibilities include:

  • Providing leadership and mentorship to the Mechanical Engineering team, as well as recruiting and developing talented Engineering professionals
  • Demonstrating recognized expertise in the design and testing of complex electronic packaging and electromechanical devices for high performance display systems and user interfaces within aircraft cockpits
  • Designing for manufacturability (DFM), service (DFS), and test (DFT)
  • Directing, reviewing, and approving design changes
  • Consulting with customers to prepare design specifications, as well as presenting project status reports and findings
  • Prototyping sheet metal, machined cast, and injected molded components
  • Verification testing including the management of environmental testing
  • Conferring with management, production, customers, and/or sales to discuss project specifications, opportunities, and/or procedures
  • Developing or implementing policies, standards, or procedures for engineering and technical work
  • Resolving manufacturing and field problems
  • Component engineering, lifecycle support, and continuous product improvement
  • Collaborating, as part of a team, to support the technical efforts of other engineers, designers, technicians, and departments
  • Applying ethical judgment in developing safe flight/life critical equipment.

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, or related engineering program of study
  • Significant work experience as a Mechanical Engineer, specifically designing complex electronic and electromechanical devices for aviation
  • Experience, with little oversight, with all the following:
  • Designing and testing high performance display systems or user interfaces
  • Working with customers to prepare and present design specifications and project status reports
  • Supporting production lifecycle maintenance
  • Environmental verification testing
  • 3D modeling software (e.g., SolidWorks).

Other Desirable Experience:

  • Master’s degree from accredited program
  • Applied knowledge with circuitry and PCB design
  • Applied knowledge of aircraft systems and avionics sub-systems
  • Prior experience recruiting, leading, and developing a team of engineers
  • Prior experience with SolidWorks
  • Prior experience in the design of highly reliable, safety critical equipment (military, avionics, clinical- medical or similar devices)
  • Prior experience with environmental testing (such as MIL-STD-810 or DO-160)
  • Pilot's license, flight training, or familiarity with general aviation.
