Lead, Electrical Engineering

About the Lead Electrical Engineering position

Our Electrical Engineers are key members of Avidyne's Hardware Engineering Team, a multidisciplinary, tight-knit group of engineers and technicians who develop and support Avidyne's wide array of products and projects.

The Lead Electrical Engineer is primarily responsible for overseeing the design, development, modification, and evaluation of electrical circuits, components, and systems for avionics equipment, as well as the team dedicated to these tasks. Routine tasks include leading and mentoring Electrical Engineers, coordinating project activities, working with management and customers to determine project specifications, and designing CPU, GPU, and other related interfaces.

Secondary responsibilities may include participating in peer design reviews, supporting manufacturing, troubleshooting field issues, technical documentation, and occasional test software development.

Our Lead Electrical Engineer’s responsibilities include:

  • Providing leadership and mentorship to the Electrical Engineering team, as well as recruiting and developing talented engineering professionals
  • Demonstrating recognized expertise in the design and testing of digital processor circuits to interface with pressure sensors, magnetometers, gyros, accelerometers, and other sensors
  • Directing, reviewing, and approving design changes
  • Consulting with customers to prepare design specifications, as well as presenting project status reports and findings.
  • Conferring with management, production, and/or sales to discuss project specifications, opportunities, and/or procedures.
  • Developing or implementing policies, standards, or procedures for engineering and technical work.
  • Planning of system architectures including functional partitions and interfaces
  • Technology selections and documentation of detailed device specifications
  • Writing requirements, specifications, and verification tests of system hardware
  • Designing, fabricating, and testing CPU, GPU, Data-bus, memory, and FPGA interfaces
  • Resolving manufacturing and field problems
  • Component engineering, lifecycle support, and continuous product improvement
  • Collaborating, as part of a team, to support the technical efforts of other engineers, designers, technicians, and departments
  • Applying ethical judgment in developing safety of flight/life critical equipment.

  • Knowledge of modern PCB production technologies and methods
  • Highly proficient with capture software (e.g., Altium, Cadence)
  • Highly proficient completing tasks including feasibility studies, circuit design, prototyping, schematic capture, verification, validation, qualification, and lifecycle support.

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering
  • Significant work experience as an Electrical Engineer, specifically designing robust embedded electronic systems
  • Experience, with little oversight, with all the following:
  • Complex circuit design and simulation
  • Serial communication busses (CAN, RS422, RS485, A429, etc.)
  • Designing embedded systems that include microprocessors, memory, programmable logic, RF, mixed signal, analog, and general-purpose electrical circuits
  • Switching DC power supply design and troubleshooting
  • Digital, analog, and RF test equipment
  • Schematic capture software (Altium, Cadence, etc.).

Other Desirable Experience:

  • BSEE or Master’s degree from ABET accredited program
  • Prior experience leading a team of engineers
  • Knowledge and skills associated with RF circuit design
  • Prior experience with Altium Designer
  • Prior experience in the design of high reliability, safety critical equipment (military, avionics, clinical- medical or similar devices)
  • Prior experience with environmental testing (such as MIL-STD-810 or DO-160)
  • Prior experience developing test software in LabView
  • Pilot's license, flight training, or familiarity with general aviation.
