Senior Mechanical Engineer

About the Senior Mechanical Engineering position

Our Senior Mechanical Engineers are key members of Avidyne's Hardware Engineering Team, a multidisciplinary, tight-knit group of engineers and technicians who develop and support Avidyne's wide array of products and projects. Each member of the team is required to both specialize in their field and cross-train in other disciplines.

The Senior Mechanical Engineer is primarily responsible for the design of robust electronics packaging and electromechanical devices including the design of human interfaces for aviation cockpit displays. They also oversee design verification, prototype builds, environmental testing, certification, transition to production, and life cycle support for all Avidyne's products. Secondary responsibilities include mentoring less senior engineers and interns, participating in peer design reviews, supporting manufacturing, and troubleshooting field issues. Incumbents should have well-developed 3D modeling skills, as well as a general understanding of onboard electronics and circuitry.

Our Senior Mechanical Engineers' responsibilities include:

  • Designing and documenting complex electronic and electromechanical devices for aircraft
  • Applying sound engineering principles and ethical judgment in a safety driven industry and work environment
  • Designing, integrating, and testing high performance display systems and user interfaces for aircraft cockpits
  • Designing and prototyping sheet metal, machined, cast, and injection molded components
  • Rapid prototyping for design validation and customer feedback
  • Verification testing including management of environmental testing
  • Designing for manufacturability (DFM), service (DFS), and test (DFT)
  • Supporting product lifecycle design maintenance.

  • Ability to successfully identify and resolve complex problems
  • Ability to maintain a positive outlook with strong and effective communication skills
  • Knowledge of modern 3D solid modeling
  • Knowledge of engineering principles
  • Knowledge of electronics and circuitry.

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Aerospace engineering, or related program of study
  • Significant work experience as a Mechanical Engineer, specifically designing complex electronic and electromechanical devices for aviation
  • Experience, with little oversight, with most, if not all the following:
  • Designing and testing high performance display systems or user interfaces
  • Supporting product lifecycle maintenance
  • Environmental verification testing
  • 3D modeling software (e.g., SolidWorks).

Other Desirable Experience:

  • Knowledge of aircraft systems and avionics sub-systems
  • Prior experience with SolidWorks
  • Prior experience in the design of high reliability, safety critical equipment (military, avionics, clinical- medical or similar devices)
  • Prior experience with environmental testing (such as MIL-STD-810 or DO-160)
  • Pilot's license, flight training, or familiarity with general aviation.
