Duties

The RCMP Air Services is a national program providing airborne law enforcement consisting of the policy centre (Air Services Branch) in Ottawa at National Headquarters and divisional air sections. Air Services has 35 aircraft (mix of fixed- and rotary-wing) at 19 air sections strategically located across the country. Air Services employs 190 employees including Pilots, Aircraft Maintenance Engineers, Flight Coordinators and Tactical Flight Officers.

Air Services is looking for Avionics Technicians (AME-E) for positions in Ottawa to perform maintenance on its fleet of aircraft. The Avionics Technicians report to the Avionics Manager and her/his duties include:
- Performing the scheduled and unscheduled avionics and mission systems related maintenance, inspection and repair of the fixed- and/or rotary-wing aircraft;
- Performing avionics installation;
- Completing all aircraft technical records and maintenance releases;
- Other duties related to the position

Work environment

The position is located at the Ottawa/Macdonald-Cartier International Airport. The position requires an in-person presence and hybrid work will not be an option.

Intent of the process

A pool of candidates may be established and may be used to staff similar positions within the RCMP in the National Capital Region on an indeterminate or specified period (including term, acting, or assignment) basis, with various linguistic profiles and various RCMP security clearances.

Should a Civilian Member (CM) be found qualified and selected for appointment, the appointment will not result in a change of status to the Public Service (PS) category for the CM.

Degree equivalency

A valid Category E aircraft maintenance engineering (AME) license issued by Transport Canada.

*Significant experience working as an E licensed Avionic Technician.
Experience in the installation and maintenance of avionics systems on aircraft, or experience in the maintenance of avionics components on the bench.

*Significant is generally defined as around three (3) years.

Graduation from a Transport Canada approved Avionics Maintenance Technician Program.

Degree equivalency

Experience in using a computer interface to troubleshoot avionic system malfunctions.
Experience working with a maintenance tracking and recording software.
Experience in wiring diagram design or generating wiring diagram.

Position Overview:
In this pivotal role, your vast experience and knowledge will guide our mechanical team in performing aircraft maintenance and rectification in accordance with manufacturer and company specifications. Your responsibilities will include inspecting, troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining mechanical components of diverse aircraft.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Be part of a team of 6, including qualified AMEs and apprentices.
  • Report directly to the Maintenance Manager and Managing Director.
  • Ensure all maintenance and repairs are executed to the highest industry standards.
  • Maintain compliance with company procedures and CASA regulations.
  • Mentor and guide mechanical apprentices to foster their development.
  • Liaise with customers to address their needs and concerns.

Selection Criteria:

  • Completed Certificate IV or Diploma in Aircraft Maintenance (Mechanical) (essential).
  • CASA B1 licenced (essential).
  • PT6 experience (essential), type licence preferred.
  • Relevant experience working in Australia (essential).
  • Proficient in sheet metal work (essential).
  • Experience with cabin mechanics fitting (essential).
  • Familiarity with Lycoming engines (essential).
  • Demonstrated experience with General Aviation aircraft (fixed/rotor wing, piston, and turbine).
  • Ability to pass a negative drug and alcohol screen, consent to a police clearance check, and obtain an ASIC.
  • Valid Australian driver’s license.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to prioritize workloads effectively.
  • Proven problem-solving skills, especially under pressure.
  • Commitment to customer service, with flexibility to undertake additional reasonable duties as required.
  • High motivation, a team-focused work ethic, and adherence to procedures.

Summary: 

The Avionics Technician will be responsible for performing a wide variety of avionics duties including installations, repairs, and troubleshooting. A qualified candidate will need to be able to perform most avionics tasks that could be required for small to midsized aircraft.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assess and recommend necessary avionics repairs and upgrades for aircraft
  • Remove, repair, install, and upgrade existing avionics equipment
  • Diagnose problems with malfunctioning avionics equipment and recommend the best approach to resolve the issues
  • Assist Estimating Department in creating accurate quotes for avionics labor and parts expenses
  • Clean and test avionics equipment for full functionality
  • Document completion of avionics repairs and installation in accordance with customer contracts and FAA regulations
  • Assist with aircraft maintenance during avionics downtime
  • Other duties as assigned 

Qualifications: 

·         High School diploma

·         Minimum five years of recent experience in avionics installations, repairs, and troubleshooting

·         Experience working on a wide variety of small to mid-sized aircraft

Skills & Knowledge:

·         Current knowledge of avionics hardware and software, and a strong familiarity with leading avionics devices and manufacturers

·         Ability to keep up to date on quickly changing technological advances in aircraft electronics

·         Ability to quickly learn new software

·         Aircraft maintenance and/sheet metal experience strongly preferred

·         A&P License preferred, but not required
 

Work Environment:   

Work outside and inside, around moving objects, and with vehicles and machinery with moving parts.  Frequent exposure to dampness and humidity, toxic chemicals, exhaust fumes, chemicals and chemical fumes, gasoline and diesel fuel. 

 

Physical Requirements:   

Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. Moderate walking, standing, climbing, heavy lifting, carrying, stooping, bending, kneeling, and reaching will all be required.
