SouthPAN Project Update

The Southern Positioning Augmentation Network (SouthPAN) is an exciting joint initiative between the Australian and New Zealand governments that will improve the safety and efficiency of air navigation. SouthPAN is an ICAO-compliant satellite-based augmentation system, similar to WAAS in the US and EGNOS in Europe.

From 2028, SouthPAN will support rural, regional, and major airports with LNAV/VNAV instrument approaches, as well as ILS-like Localizer Performance with Vertical guidance (LPV) approaches. SouthPAN will arrive at a time when SBAS avionics are widely available to piston and small turbine aircraft, and are becoming available on narrow- and wide-body jets. Geoscience Australia is delivering SouthPAN for the benefit of a broad range of users—including aircraft but also those in agriculture, resources, transport, spatial, and others.

This information seminar will provide an update for attendees about the benefits of SBAS, and the implementation project's status and progress.
