Avionics Technician with A&P - 5+ Years Experience

ROCKET AIR AVIONICS SOLUTIONS (formerly known as Sebastian Communication) is seeking an experienced Avionics Technician with an active A&P license to perform avionics inspections, troubleshooting, repairs, modifications, and installations on a variety of General Aviation light and reciprocating aircraft. The Avionics Technician has a strong background in avionics systems and possesses excellent technical skills. Attention to detail, adherence to safety protocols, and a commitment to quality workmanship are essential attributes for this role.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Adhere to safety procedures and protocols to prevent accidents, injuries, and damage to aircraft and equipment.
  • Conduct avionics inspections, system testing, and troubleshooting to identify and diagnose electrical and avionics system malfunctions in General Aviation aircraft.
  • Perform repairs, modifications, and installations of avionics components, instruments, communication/navigation systems, autopilot systems, and other related equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with manufacturer specifications, technical manuals, and regulatory requirements while performing avionics maintenance and repairs.
  • Utilize various diagnostic tools, test equipment, and software to perform accurate system evaluations and ensure proper functioning of avionics systems.
  • Collaborate with other maintenance personnel, engineers, and suppliers to resolve complex avionics issues and provide technical support as needed.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment, ensuring proper care and storage of tools, equipment, and materials.
  • Stay updated on the latest advancements, regulations, and industry best practices in avionics technology through continuous learning and professional development.
  • Document all maintenance and repair activities, including inspection findings, repairs made, parts used, and test results in accordance with company procedures and applicable regulations.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Airframe & Powerplant license required.
  • Technical education or certification in avionics preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience working as an Avionics Technician in General Aviation required.
  • In-depth knowledge of avionics systems, electrical circuits, communication/navigation systems, autopilot systems, and related equipment required.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting technical manuals, blueprints, schematics, and wiring diagrams.
  • Experience with avionics testing and diagnostic equipment, such as multi-meters, oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, and software tools.
  • Familiarity with relevant regulations and standards, such as FAA regulations and guidelines.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work effectively under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to follow instructions and procedures accurately.
  • Effective communication skills to collaborate with team members, engineers, and clients.
  • Strong commitment to safety, quality workmanship, and continuous improvement.

Pay commensurate with experience.

Company Overview

Mid-South Avionics, Inc. (MSA) is an FAA Part 145 Repair Station located at EKY (Mitchell Field Road) in Bessemer, Alabama. Founded in 1987, MSA specializes in avionics installations and avionics/electrical system maintenance and repair for General and Business Aviation aircraft.

MSA holds major avionics dealership authorizations including Garmin, Collins Aerospace, Universal Avionics, Genesys Aerosystems, and others. Our technicians work in a close-knit, team-oriented environment led by owner and lead technician Donovan Richards, who maintains exceptionally high standards for workmanship, safety, and customer satisfaction.

Position Responsibilities

  • Perform avionics installations including EFIS systems, engine monitors, autopilots, radio/navigation equipment, complete panel installations, and cabin entertainment systems.
  • Perform scheduled and unscheduled avionics and electrical system maintenance and repairs, including:
  • 91.411/91.413 certifications
  • RVSM certifications
  • Avionics-related Instructions for Continued Airworthiness (ICA) inspections
  • Ensure all work is performed in accordance with FAA regulations, manufacturer instructions, and MSA’s Repair Station and Quality Manual (RSQM).
  • Accurately document all work performed using company MRO software.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ability to read, write, and understand English.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and communicate effectively with coworkers and customers.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment and assist with keeping company facilities presentable.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment with a strong commitment to quality and aviation safety.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience as an avionics technician at an FAA Part 145 Repair Station.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of hands-on experience performing avionics installations, including:
  • Wiring harness fabrication
  • Soldering and wiring repairs
  • Removal and installation of avionics components
  • System configuration, calibration, and checkout procedures
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience working with Garmin avionics systems, including but not limited to:
  • G5, GI-275, G3X Touch
  • G500/600/700TXi
  • GFC-500, GFC-600
  • GTN/GNX/GNC/GTX/GDL
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience performing 91.411/91.413 and RVSM inspections, including pitot/static system troubleshooting and repair.
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting electrical wiring diagrams, manufacturer installation manuals, and aircraft maintenance manuals.
  • Familiarity with avionics test equipment such as air data test sets, transponder test sets, and NAV/COM test sets.
  • Familiarity with general aircraft tools and equipment including cable tensiometers, digital protractors, and torque wrenches.

Preferred Qualifications

  • FAA Airframe and/or Powerplant (A&P) certificate.
  • Previous Repairman’s Certificate experience (eligible to apply for a Repairman’s Certificate through MSA after 90 days).
  • Sheet metal experience, including autopilot servo bracket installations and instrument panel retrofits.
  • Experience with AutoCAD and/or AutoCAD Electrical.
  • Machining experience and/or experience operating machining equipment.
  • General aircraft mechanical experience, including:
  • Flight control rigging
  • Autopilot servo installations
  • Engine maintenance
  • Aircraft ground operations

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • 1-3 years related experience preferred
  • Must exibit a focused attention to detail
  • Ability to read, write, and understand the English language
  • Ability to read and understand technical installation and maintenance manuals, wiring diagrams, drawings, schematics, etc.
  • Demonstrate proper use of basic hand tools: heat gun, hand crimpers, screwdrivers, solder pot, ruler and other machines such as pinning machines and automatic wire strippers
  • Ability to identify colors and utilize good hand/eye coordination
  • Must have basic computer knowledge/skills

Essential Job Functions:

  • Ability to identify antennas on various aircraft
  • Familiarity with biennials involving altimeters, transponders, encoders and static systems
  • Ability to properly connect/install various instruments and/or avionics in a variety of aircraft per manufacturers specifications
  • Ability to identify various components and circuits to facilitate proper installation
  • Fabricate cable assemblies and wiring harnesses using manufacturer instructions while ensuring high company standards are met
  • Apply heat shrink to completed assemblies
  • Crimp connectors to ends of assemblies
  • Complete all paperwork, checklists, forrms, and reports as required in accordance with company procedures and all applicable regulations and guidelines
  • Complete tasks on time with minimal supervision and exhibit good problem-solving skills
  • Responsible for clean-up and bench organization
  • Assist coworkers to complete assignments when necessary
  • Perform all other duties as assigned

Partial Duties and responsibilities

Pack and unpack shipments and of aerospace components, materials, and products.

Conduct thorough inspections of all items to ensure they meet established quality and safety standards.

Verify quantities and inspect for any visible damage or discrepancies.

Accurately record inspection results and maintain detailed inspection records and reports.

Create and maintain organized, up-to-date records of received materials and components.

Basic computer skills

Subject to pre-hire, random, and for cause drug and alcohol testing under DOT and FAA regulations.

Partial Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

  • Working conditions will most often include a warehouse-type environment, which may at times be loud and/or busy.
